1 Corinthians 13:1-3
If I speak in the tongues of men or of angels, but do not have love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal. 2 If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have a faith that can move mountains, but do not have love, I am nothing. 3 If I give all I possess to the poor and give over my body to hardship that I may boast, but do not have love, I gain nothing.
True Christian Religion 377
Charity alone does not produce good deeds, much less does faith alone, but charity and faith together do.
Uniting Love with Faith
At Light for Life, we believe that God is love and His love flowing through us is what gives us life. We call the good that comes from love ‘charity,’ a definition that goes beyond the more common usage – that of volunteering or giving time/money/goods. As important as having faith is, we believe that being charitable to each other and our community (i.e., loving our neighbor) is a necessary part of following God and working to become more like Him. The writings of Emanuel Swedenborg teach that the more that we can unite these two things – love and faith – the closer we are to heaven. Light for Life practices loving and supporting our neighbor through:
- Fellowship time after church services
- Spiritual growth small groups and classes
- Programs and activities that help youth learn values in a safe and positive setting
- Community service and social events
